The decision is also a complete reversal by longtime owner Dan Snyder, who in 2013 told USA Today that he would “never” change the team’s name. “As a lifelong Redskins fan, I think that the Redskins fans understand the great tradition and what it’s all about and what it means,” Snyder told the paper.
The change is a long time coming, but is largely thanks to the Black Lives Matter movement, which has gained momentum following the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and countless other Black Americans. The movement has sparked a global conversation about race, and put the heat on many organizations to rethink existing products or logos that are viewed as offensive. Outside of sports, the Aunt Jemima brand has been discontinued; Uncle Ben’s and Mrs. Butterworth’s are undergoing rebranding, too.
