The Beetle Transformers Bumblebee shirt VW wouldn't let them use the Beetle (or any of their cars) to begin with. I think they didn't want their brand associated with violence or something? I mean don't get me wrong, they were always going to make Bumblebee a Camaro, but VW still said they wouldn't let Bumblebee be a bug. The company and the Beetle were only bought into being by Hitler sponsoring Ferdinand Porsche’s design to create a state manufacturer with a payment plan the people could afford. It’s no wonder VW has been a little sensitive on the issue ever since.

It wasn't a creative decision. Volkswagen no longer licenses their vehicles to promote what they consider "war toys". Germans are particularly sensitive about such things for some reason, not sure The Beetle Transformers Bumblebee shirt. Recently Takara/Tomy and Hasbro got the VW license again, in order to make a display piece version of his original cartoon form. There's rumors circulating that they're going to use it for Bumblebee in the next live-action movie as well, which is a spinoff about Bumblebee set in the 80s.
