My experience is the opposite. Doctor Horse and Rad Tech Unicorn shirt had patients hold on for hours/days for the family to make it into town. Twice I have witnessed family members walk into the room and within a minute or two the patient arrests. Maybe it’s a patient-specific phenomenon that depends on the family dynamic. Maybe sometimes they wait, and sometimes they prefer their family not to remember that moment when they choose to go. Idk. Just my thought.

I had one patient before he stopped talking, tell me to ask his wife to leave because he didn’t want to die in front of her. He said it felt to him like he was taking a big poop and didn’t want anyone to see that because it’s personal. Doctor Horse and Rad Tech Unicorn shirt obliged and he went not even two minutes after I told him everyone was gone and dimmed the lights. I was happy I could do that for him when he could no longer speak for himself. He also didn’t want to disappoint his wife by him saying he didn’t want her there.

I've seen this a lot too. My gramma was actively dying for like 3 days but didn't let go until we left... she probably felt like she was being "a bad host" as she would have put it. Doctor Horse and Rad Tech Unicorn shirt will be the bad guy any day in that situation. Be mad at me the nurse you met yesterday rather than resentful towards your spouse of 50 years. OP, be proud you were present and let this patient pass comfortably and not alone. I know it sucks to see, especially for the first time, but at least you didn't have to do CPR and the whole shebang on the patient. They went with dignity. I hope you can take some comfort in that.
