I think it's a great idea to describe Railroaders I'd like to help you but I just can't fix stupid shirt the process you follow to get to a satisfactory layout and I feel many people starting out and facing similar choices could get some really useful insights out of it so by all means please post updates whenever you feel like it! How is Anyrail for dealing with several layers, inclines, and clearances? I'm thinking about snaking a mountainous railway upwards and tried xtrackCAD but it deals badly with heights.

That's a good question! I work in the Railroaders I'd like to help you but I just can't fix stupid shirt video games industry so to me, creating inclines in a 3D world is very easy given the tools that we have. That being said, AnyRail and other track planning software are not very good at that. You can't "paint" elevation and that's the most natural way of doing it. What I usually do is leave elevation out of the track planning software and handle it myself as I'm laying track on the layout. The same thing applies to clearances, you can't really handle it naturally.

As for layers, AnyRail is great at Railroaders I'd like to help you but I just can't fix stupid shirt. It's not as intuitive as it could be but it's good. For example, you can't hide a layer that you've selected. You have to select the other layer then you're able to hide the unselected one. That really makes no sense when it comes to user experience and it's probably a way around a programming technicality the devs found. It doesn't serve the people paying for the software, it serves the people building the software. To me that's a bad thing however, it's not really a big showstopper. You stumble a bit as you get used to unselecting the things you want to hide but after a little while, you easily adapt.
