This is awesome for setting a campaign Devil's Music Sing-Along shirt. The devil is in the details. Given the blandness of the food, I imagine wizards who can cast prestidigitation to give taste would be invaluable in a long journey. Since you're a sailor, can you please explain why don't they just call it Left and Right instead of Port and Starboard? I assume it might be covered in your Ship Anatomy piece.

I'm not Devil's Music Sing-Along shirt, but I believe it's because left and right are relative to the speaker, port and starboard are relative to the ship. Yeah, this is it. The cardinal directions of the compass rose are relative to the planet; Bow/Fore, Stern/Aft, Port, and Starboard are relative to the ship because the ship's orientation can change relative to the planet; front/ahead, back/behind, left, and right refer to an individual's orientation, which is not often let alone always going to be true of a whole ship's crew and even if it were is still not true for the whole planet.

The origins for Devil's Music Sing-Along shirt are I believe "steering board" or older language equivalent depending on how old the term is, and "larboard" the original left side being too easy to confuse with starboard in a pinch especially if shouting so it was changed to "port", as in the side that faces into port. The boat would be steered from the right to the left side would face the dock, and so "port"-side. Yinyang107 is right on the money. On a ship, you only have the ship itself as a landmark, so 'right' and 'left' gets confusing when speaking from sailor to sailor. Who's left is left? Who's right is right? Port and starboard are so unique that nobody could possibly get them screwed up, and when emergencies happen you need to have everyone on the same page so they can react properly.
