The first big thing is to have a zero tolerance policy for hate speech from all students. The second thing is to avoid making any direction in my classroom that references gender. A lot of teachers have students sit 'boy-girl-boy-girl' or have 'all the girls read paragraph one and all the boys read paragraph two'.

If I have to split up teams, I have them go by the color of their t-shirt/backpack/pencil/anything not related to their body or gender. Which brings me to my last point: I NEVER EVER comment on my student's bodies or appearance. This seems like a given, but I put a blanket embargo on everything just to be safe. I never acknowledge a new hair cut or the style of a student's attire.
