Because looking as if you were meant to be there as you are, which you likely do if you are confident and likely don't if you aren't and are thus skittish, is something that can stop people from looking for stuff that would out you. This really is what makes the joke thing work: if you are capable of joking about some feature that you dislike about yourself, or of complaining about it to people as if it was a given.

What I cannot stress enough is indeed voice. If I am not sure of someone’s gender by their looks, their voice confirms it to me. And their voice can also change my opinion easily. I would say it overrides almost everything that comes to passing unless. It is a clear male trait like the beard or big Adam's apple. Even with voice, there are different levels of passing, though. I was passing perfectly living in suburban Texas, moved to a trendy area of Los Angeles, and got clocked all the time because everybody here has a heard a "trans voice" before. I had to work extra hard to get that last little bit.
